Womens Jewelry Assoc. selects DEF as their beneficiary of the Diva Gives Back Competition
The Women’s Jewelry Association (WJA) invites designers from all walks of the jewelry industry to submit entries for its DIVA Gives Back design competition. The entry deadline is May 4, 2009, and awards will be announced during the WJA DIVA Awards Party on June 1 at Lavo in Las Vegas’ Palazzo Hotel.
“This year’s competition will support the important work of the Diamond Empowerment Fund (D.E.F.),” announced Yancy Weinrich, WJA president. D.E.F. is a nonprofit international organization committed to funding education initiatives that empower economically disadvantaged people in African nations where diamonds are a natural resource.
WJA’s annual DIVA Design Competition promotes and encourages jewelry design by women. Open to all women, regardless of experience, training or background in jewelry or jewelry design, the competition is judged by a panel of industry experts who evaluate designs based on their originality, creativity, wearability,\ and interpretation of the competition category.
1. Canadian Diamond DIVA, sponsored by Rio Tinto and manufactured by Waldman Diamond Co. The winning design, to be donated to the D.E.F. charity auction, will showcase Canadian diamonds and retail for approximately $5,000.
2. Red Carpet DIVA
This award winner will be destined for a Red Carpet event, yet it retails for less than $10,000. If not already created, the rendering will be interpreted by designer Christian Tse and manufactured for the D.E.F. charity auction.
3. DIVA Gives Back to D.E.F.
The chosen design must retail for less than $500 and be considered for mass production as a fundraising item for D.E.F.
