DEF Scholar: Celeste O’Connor
Age: 17
Gender: Female
Home country: Johannesburg, South Africa
Activities: Tutor, student government, student-run business
With deeply rooted interests in public health and politics, Celeste hopes to pursue medicine in college and one day dreams of being South Africa’s Minister of Health.
Celeste’s Dream:
I consider myself to be a leader because I am capable and have been successful in bringing about much needed change within my community. I am a leader who wants to see my community take ownership of its solutions and who ceases to be reliant on government institutions for help.
After graduating from African Leadership Academy, I want to study medicine and specialize in pediatrics. I also want to learn about policy making. I dream of empowering those less fortunate than myself by bringing about change in the health sector. Too often people are turned away because of lack of funds or because the facility is under staffed – many of these are children and young people just like me. In the future I want to see a health care system that is more accessible to the youth of South Africa.
