In the fall of 2006, Russell Simmons and his delegation went on a 10 day fact finding mission regarding how diamonds have impacted African nations, mainly South Africa and Botswana. This resulted in the formation of the Diamond Empowerment Fund (D.E.F).

DEF Chairman, Russell Simmons was awarded the Vanguard award at the 40th NAACP Awards. This award is presented to people who use their groundbreaking work to inspire people. Russell continues to push the envelope all his social and economic ventures by creating real solutions to the urban community.
