In 2009, D.E.F. selected a second beneficiary organization, the African Leadership Academy (ALA) and created a DEF Scholars program. D.E.F. will provide scholarships to 32 students attending ALA from diamond producing nations. Founded with the belief that ethical leadership is the key to transforming the African continent by developing, connecting and supporting its future leaders, the ALA is based in Johannesburg, South Africa but with a truly Pan-African approach. They are an innovative two-year college-prep school with a student population drawn from all 54 African countries and a unique focus on leadership, entrepreneurship and African studies, designed to prepare each student for a lifetime of leadership on the continent.

Of the seven diamond-producing countries represented at ALA, over 50% are recovering from a recent history of civil unrest. These seven countries also have an average combined literacy rate of 63.3% (Range: 86.4% to 35.1%). It is evident that there is significant work to be done to educate the future leaders of these countries, thus cultivating great leaders who will create monumental change. By supporting the development of ethical leaders, DEF will help to propagate political stability and economic development in these countries. In addition, DEF scholars would help the Academy raise awareness of the economic and social inequalities prevalent in diamond-producing countries.
